Valley Rural Electric Cooperative will host its 15th annual benefit golf outing Thursday, June 25 at the Huntingdon Country Club, 10305 Raystown Road, Huntingdon. All of Valley's offices will be closed that day as employees lend a hand for the event. Started by Valley REC's employee health and wellness committee in 2012, the event has raised almost $490,000 for beneficiaries since its inception. This year's tournament will benefit six area residents: Liam Hughes, Blake Grove, Abby Sholly, Izzy Boyd, Alyssa Starr, and Sherry Honstine Miles.
Beneficiaries
Liam Hughes
Since his birth in June 2025, little Liam Hughes has required many surgeries to his spine and abdomen and faces additional procedures. He has spina bifida, LUMBAR syndrome, and complications from having just one kidney. He remains a happy boy despite his medical conditions. Liam is the son of Shawn and Brooke Hughes of New Enterprise.
Blake Grove
Blake Grove, 4, of East Waterford loves to play outside and has a special affection for animals. He enjoys playing with trucks, cars, dinosaurs, and musical instruments. Recently, he was diagnosed with three brain tumors. He had surgery in January to remove two of the tumors, and his medical team is planning the best path forward for him. Blake is the son of Steve Stoutzenberger and Maddie Grove
Abby Sholly
Five-year-old Abby Sholly was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2025. She has endured a bone marrow biopsy and numerous blood transfusions and blood draws often complicated by collapsed veins. Abby has two years of chemotherapy ahead of her. This resilient and determined youngster is the daughter of Glenn and Sarah Sholly of Mill Creek.
Izzy Boyd
Izzy Boyd, 14, of Huntingdon has a progressive and terminal degenerative disease. Her condition has advanced significantly, and her mobility has declined. As Izzy's needs increase, providing her care has become increasingly challenging. Izzy's brother Alex, 21, has the same condition and is further along in the disease progression. Izzy's mother, Samantha Gladfelter, has faced the grief of the sudden January 2026 passing of her husband, Johnny Gladfelter, as the family continues to face these medical conditions.
Alyssa Starr
Alyssa Starr of Huntingdon is a devoted mother of two beautiful children, Grayson, 13, and Ivy, 4. On her 32nd birthday last August, Alyssa was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, which had spread throughout her body. She is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments and has leaned on her strong faith in God through this ordeal.
Sherry Honstine Miles
Still grieving the sudden loss of a grandson, Carter Wagner, in July 2025, Sherry Honstine Miles and her husband, Wes, of Hesston learned that Sherry had esophageal cancer. A November surgery to remove part of her esophagus revealed complications with a blood vessel. After more testing, she had reconstructive surgery in December, to be followed by chemotherapy.
